Rohr dreams of leading Benin to 2026 FIFA World Cup after beating Nigeria
Gernot Rohr says he can dream of leading another African country to the FIFA World Cup six years after leading Nigeria to the 2018 edition in Russia.
Rohr led the Cheetahs of Benin Republic to their first win over Nigeria following their 2-1 win in Abidjan on Monday evening in a 2026 FIFA World Cup matchday four qualifier.
The Franco-German said at his post race press conference that the victory over the almighty Nigeria has rekindled his hope of another World Cup appearance as a coach.
‘When I arrived in Benin, I was trusted with a three-year contract. I said we want to go to the World Cup. I played in the World Cup with Nigeria in Russia, we had a very young team, the youngest in the World Cup by the way, and I want to do it again.
‘We can dream, we have to make the players dream, we have to make the staff dream, and why not?, he said.
The Cheetahs are joint top with South Africa with seven points after rounds of matches and will hope to win their remaining six matches including the reverse tie in Nigeria in September 2025 to get their dream realized.
