Salah at His Most Prolific AFCON: Can He End the Wait for a First Title?
Mohamed Salah is enjoying his most productive Africa Cup of Nations campaign yet, but the question remains whether this form will finally deliver him the continental crown that has eluded him throughout his glittering career.
The Egyptian forward has been directly involved in five goals at AFCON 2025, scoring four and assisting once, surpassing his previous tallies from past tournaments.
His strike in the 3-2 quarter-final win over Ivory Coast took his overall AFCON tally to 11, equalling the record of his coach Hossam Hassan. Salah has now scored in every match he has played at this year’s competition, missing only the goalless draw against Angola when rested.
At 33, the Liverpool star is just one goal away from Egypt’s all-time AFCON scoring record, held by Hassan El Shazly with 12.
His consistency has placed him alongside Sadio Mané as one of the most influential players of the last decade in the tournament, with Salah’s 11 goals and 5 assists rivaling Mané’s 10 goals and 9 assists.
Yet despite his brilliance, Salah has never lifted the AFCON trophy. Egypt’s hopes now rest on whether his prolific form can carry the Pharaohs past Senegal, Morocco, and Nigeria in the final stages.
For Salah, this may be the defining chance to end the long wait and cement his legacy with a first continental title.
