Sanwo-Olu to Celebrate Lagos Athletes’ Triumph at World School Games
Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu is preparing to host a special reception for student athletes who brought glory to Lagos at the 2026 World School Games Olympia in Doha, Qatar.
The competition, held from January 29 to 31, saw Lagos schools deliver a historic medal haul across athletics, football, and swimming in the U-11, U-13, and U-15 categories, earning international recognition for their discipline, teamwork, and resilience.
Saint Saviour’s School emerged as overall champions in the U-11 division, while Grange School showcased consistency by finishing second in the U-13 category and third in the U-15 category.
Other schools, including Riverbank, British International, Lagos Preparatory and Secondary, and Corona, also distinguished themselves with outstanding performances across multiple events.
The Lagos State Sports Commission emphasized that the forthcoming reception is not only to celebrate medals but to honour the values of excellence and sportsmanship demonstrated by the athletes.
Their success underscores Lagos’ growing dominance in structured school sports and highlights the strength of its youth development framework.
Governor Sanwo-Olu will also extend recognition to Team Lagos athletes who represented Nigeria at the African Youth Games in Angola from December 10 to 20, 2025.
Drawn from leading schools such as Greensprings, these athletes contributed significantly to Nigeria’s medal tally, affirming Lagos’ capacity to produce talents ready for continental and global competition.
Director General of the Lagos Sports Commission, Mr. Lekan Fatodu, described the dual achievements as a watershed moment for the state.
He noted that many of the athletes began their journey at the National Youth Games before progressing to continental prominence, a testament to Lagos’ revitalized school sports ecosystem. Fatodu praised the commitment of parents, educators, coaches, and administrators, stressing that the victories are a source of immense pride for the government and people of Lagos State.
