Shaibu: Tinubu’s Renewed Sports Drive Inspires Reform at National Institute for Sports

The Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of the National Institute for Sports (NIS), Comrade Philip Shaibu, has credited President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s unwavering support for sports as the driving force behind ongoing reforms at the Institute.

Speaking in Abuja while receiving a delegation from NEWSTAP and the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), who formally presented him with a letter of nomination for an award, Shaibu emphasized that the current administration has demonstrated uncommon commitment to repositioning sports as a strategic tool for youth empowerment, national unity, and economic diversification.

He noted that the President’s interest in sports development has translated into improved attention and funding for the National Sports Commission and its agencies.

Shaibu, the immediate past Deputy Governor of Edo State, reflected on his longstanding passion for sports, recalling his role in transforming the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium and developing mini stadia across Edo to revive grassroots participation.

He explained that his appointment as NIS Director-General was met with skepticism due to his past criticisms of Nigeria’s sports administration, but he chose action over excuses, beginning with renovations to create a conducive working environment for staff.

Addressing suggestions that his new role was a demotion, Shaibu stressed that public service is about impact, not titles.

‘If the President finds you worthy out of over 200 million Nigerians, who am I to say no? Any position you are called to serve your country is recognition,’ he remarked.

He disclosed that the NIS has now developed a comprehensive 10-year strategic plan to restore its relevance, insisting that ideas and structure must come before financial gains if Nigerian sports are to thrive.

The NEWSTAP/SWAN delegation, led by George Aluo, commended Shaibu’s resilience, visionary leadership, and stakeholder engagement approach.

They highlighted his achievements in Edo State and praised his humility in accepting the NIS role despite public criticism, describing his reforms as bold and patriotic.

Responding, Shaibu expressed gratitude for the recognition, calling it encouragement to stay focused on institutional reforms.

He reiterated that the NIS under his leadership would continue to align with President Tinubu’s vision of rebuilding Nigeria’s sporting glory through structure, innovation, and dedication to national interest.
