Silva Explains Why Iwobi Had to Start Vs Brighton After AFCON 2025 Return

Fulham head coach Marco Silva has explained why Alex Iwobi was immediately restored to the starting lineup following his return from the Africa Cup of Nations.

Speaking ahead of Fulham’s clash, Silva highlighted the importance of his Nigerian stars, noting that Calvin Bassey and Iwobi have been ‘key players for us for the last few seasons,’ while Samuel Chukwueze is still working his way back to full rhythm.

Silva admitted the team felt the absence of the trio during AFCON, but stressed that Iwobi’s experience and consistency made him the natural choice to start right away.

‘They don’t need to readapt, it’s a moment for Alex to start,’ Silva said, adding that Fulham’s limited options made his inclusion vital.

The Portuguese manager also emphasized the need for resilience after last week’s late defeat to Leeds.

‘Football is about ups and downs and the way you react is important. We cannot keep crying about one game. We need to go for the next one,’ he remarked.
