Simbine: I’m here in Xiamen to win the 100m event
World 100m leader and former African record holder, Akani Simbine says he is in Xiamen to win the blue ribband event in the opening leg of the Wanda Diamond League, World Athletics’ elite one day meeting series.
The South African who ended his global medal drought in individual events with his bronze medal win at the World indoor championships in Nanjing, China last month and tops the 100m World list with the 9.90 he ran in Botswana early this month says all the athletes that will be at the starting line up in the event have only one wish and that is to win.
“I came here to win,’ says Simbine who expressed his readiness to take on a stacked 100m field on Saturday.
‘I believe we are all here for the same reason and I want to win to officially start the season on a high note,’ said the South African.
Simbine will be up against three fellow Africans including record holder at 9.77, Ferdinand Omanyala of Kenya who he sped past in Botswana last month, as well as Emmanuel Eseme of Cameroon and reigning Olympic 200m champion, Letsile Tebogo of Botswana.
The South African will also compete for the eight top points and $10,000 top prize money on offer with former World champion, Christian Coleman of the USA and Azu Jeremiah, the reigning World 60m indoor champion.
