Six years after, Enekwechi and Amusan return to Rabat for Diamond League action
Paris 2024 Olympics Shot Put finalist, Chukwuebuka Enekwechi will make his 2025 Wanda Diamond League debut on Sunday at the Mohammed VI International Athletics Meeting in Rabat, Morocco.
This annual athletics event is named after the King of Morocco and will be held at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Sports Complex.
The Nigerian went all the way to the final of the event last year becoming in the process the first man to compete in the finals of World Athletics’ elite one day meeting series.
Enekwechi is returning to the Prince Moulay Abdellah Sports Complex six years after his first visit which fetched him his first African Games gold in the event.
The 32-year-old will be up against two of the three medalists at the Olympics viz silver medalist Joe Kovacs of the USA and Rajindra Campbell of Jamaica who won the bronze medal.
Also, in the line up in Rabat are 2017 World champion and twice Olympics bronze medal winner, Tom Walsh of New Zealand, another American, Payton Otterdahl who was fourth in Paris and Italian, Leonardo Fabbri who was also ahead of the Nigerian who finished sixth in Paris.
Another Nigerian listed for action but not in a Diamond League event is sprint hurdler, Tobiloba Ayomide Amusan.
Like Enekwechi, the last time Amusan was in Rabat was in 2019 where she broke the then 100m hurdles Games record held by compatriot, Glory Alozie twice on her way to successfully defend her title.
The 28-year-old will be fighting for whatever cash is on offer as well as ranking points at the meeting since the 100m hurdles is not a Diamond League event in Rabat.
Amusan has competed twice in the Diamond League this season and she finished fourth in both – Xiamen (12.74) and Kepaio (12.66), both in China.
The Nigerian’s biggest hurdles will be Kambundji Ditaji, silver medalist at the World indoor championships last March in Tianjing, Pia Skrzyszowska of Poland, and flying Dutchwoman, Visser Nadine.
