Sober Eagles return with a vow: We will be at 2026 FIFA World Cup!
The Super Eagles returned to Nigeria Tuesday after losing 2-1 to the Cheetahs of Benin Republic in their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying game in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire on Monday evening.
The result means the Super Eagles are yet to win any of their first four games in the series, drawing three before the loss on Monday night.
Nigeria is now placed fifth in the group and four points adrift of leaders Rwanda, Benin and South Africa.
With just six games left to play, the Super Eagles will have to win all their remaining games and hope the leaders also slip up somehow outside the games against Nigeria.
The Super Eagles are confident they can achieve what many Nigerians have termed the impossible judging by the team’s antecedents.
‘We are back in the country and we are not happy about the way the two games panned out. We have had talks among ourselves and have resolved to fight hard till the end to ensure we do the impossible which is qualifying for the 2026 World Cup. We don’t take your support for granted, we thank you immensely,’ the Eagles wrote on their official X page.
