South Africa wins Africa’s first gold medal of Paris 2024 Olympics

South Africa has become the first African nation to win a gold medal at the Paris 2024 Olympics in Paris, France.

The South Africans recorded the feat in the swimming where Tatjana Smith won the women’s 100m Breaststroke at the Paris La Defense Arena on Monday.

The 27 year old also won the event at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics in addition to winning the gold medal and set the world record in the 200-metre breaststroke at the Games three years ago.

The former world record holder in the long course 200-metre breaststroke and the African record holder in the long course and short course 100-metre breaststroke as well as the short course 200-metre breaststroke won in 1:05.28 ahead of China’s Tang Qianting (1:05.54) and Mc Sharry Mona of Ireland (1:05.59).

South Africa has now won three medals made up of one gold and two bronze medals.

Tunisia and Egypt have also registered their presence on the medal table.
