Sporting Lagos, Crown FC, Lobi Stars, FC Ebedei Seal Gold Cup Semi-Final Spots

The semi-final lineup for the 13th edition of the prestigious Gold Cup is now complete, with Sporting Lagos, Crown FC, Lobi Stars, and FC Ebedei emerging as the final four contenders after a dramatic conclusion to the group stage at the FC Ebedei Stadium in Apele, Sagamu.

In Group A, Sporting Lagos and FC Ebedei both finished with nine points, but Sporting Lagos topped the group on head-to-head advantage, having defeated the Oliseh Boys 2-1 earlier in the tournament.

FC Ebedei sealed their qualification with a comeback win over GreenLock FC, who had taken an early lead in the 7th minute through Aminu Abdullah’s well-struck half volley. Ebedei responded with two second-half penalties converted by tournament top scorer Kennedy John, earning him the Player of the Match award and securing a 2-1 victory.

Meanwhile, Sunshine Stars, who were in a strong position to qualify, saw their hopes dashed in a tense encounter against Abakaliki FC. Chuks Adoha gave Sunshine the lead in the 48th minute, but Jude Aleke’s stunning free kick eleven minutes later leveled the score.

The draw eliminated both teams, with Sunshine Stars finishing on seven points and Abakaliki FC on four.

Group B delivered its own share of drama. Lobi Stars cruised past Seamoriow FC with a dominant 5-1 win, finishing second in the group with seven points and a +6 goal difference.

The top-of-the-table clash between Ekiti United and Crown FC was a nail-biter, with both teams entering the match on strong footing. A late tactical switch by Crown FC coach Deji Ayeni proved decisive, as substitute Fabode Olaitan broke the deadlock in the 84th minute with a brilliant strike into the top corner, securing a 1-0 win.

Crown FC finished atop Group B with nine points, followed by Lobi Stars. Ekiti United, despite their strong showing, were edged out on goal difference and exited the tournament with seven points and a +2 margin.

With Wednesday designated as a rest day, attention now turns to Thursday’s semi-final clashes.
