Super Eagles equal lowest end of year ranking in six years
The Super Eagles of Nigeria have ended the year 2024 as the 44th best ranked nation in the world, their end of year lowest ranking since 2018 when they were ranked 44th best.
The Nigeria senior national team will also end as Africa’s fifth best nation, above reigning African champion, Cote d’Ivoire who are ranked 46th best in the world.
The Super Eagles rose to 28th best in the world in February this year, equaling best ranking since February 2013 when they were ranked 28th after their Africa Cup of Nations triumph in South Africa.
The Nigerians soared to 28th in February 2024 also on account of their incredible performance at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire where they were beaten in the final by the host nation.
Since then, the team has continued to slide in the rankings as they moved from 28th to 30th in April, down to 38th in June when the rankings were updated.
The Super Eagles slipped one step to 39th in July, the position they retained in September before moving three steps up in October to 36th.
The fall began the following month when the team fell to 44th in November and retained the same status in December to end the year as the 44th best in the world.
Nigeria rose to her highest ranking of fifth in 1994 and lowest ranking of 82nd in 1999 with an average ranking of 39 since the FIFA World Rankings started.
