Super Eagles need Rohr’s help to put their destiny in their own hands in race for 2026 FIFA World Cup ticket
If the Super Eagles win their remaining five games, it may still not be enough for them to pick Group C’s lone ticket to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Nigerians will still need one or both of Cheetahs of Republic Benin and the Amavubi of Rwanda to take points off the Bafana Bafana of South Africa who can still qualify if they lose only one of their remining five games.
The Super Eagles have started well with the victory in Kigali. Anything short of that would have all but killed Nigeria’s hopes of staging a comeback to the mundial.
Nigerians will now be hoping Gernot Rohr, the former coach of the Super Eagles will do them a favour by either beating the Bafana Bafana or drawing against them on Tuesday when they meet on Tuesday.
Benin Republic will feel they are still in contention for their first ever FIFA World Cup ticket, and rightly so too as they are a point above Nigeria and will qualify if they win their remining five games.
Victory against South Africa will take them top of the group with 11 points while Nigeria will move to nine points if the Super Eagles beat the Warriors of Zimbabwe in Uyo on Tuesday.
If Rwanda beat Lesotho in Kigali, the Amavubi will move to 10 points, and joint second with South Africa.
If this is scenario after Tuesday’s games, the Super Eagles will firmly have their destiny in their hands as they will only need to win their remaining games, including the potentially decisive game against South Africa in September.
