Super Eagles New-Boy Fernandez Grateful for Call-Up, Eyes Full Debut Vs Jordan

Super Eagles newcomer Emmanuel Oluwasegun Fernandez has expressed his immense gratitude after making his debut for Nigeria’s senior national team, describing the opportunity as a dream come true.

‘When I first got the call to come and play for Nigeria, I was a bit shocked the national team wanted me. I am grateful I am here and I am grateful for the opportunity,’ said the Glasgow Rangers defender.

Fernandez, who began his career as a midfielder before being converted into a defender, reflected on his journey from college football to the European stage.

‘I watched the last AFCON and I can say the Nigeria team is very good and star-studded. I love the feeling here. Playing in the Europa League is an amazing feeling, especially when I think about how I started my career and how I developed,’ he added.

The 21-year-old made his first appearance for Nigeria when he came on as a substitute in the Super Eagles’ 2-1 victory over Iran in Antalya last Friday.

With Chelle set to rotate his squad, Fernandez could be in line for his full Nigeria debut on Tuesday when the Eagles face Jordan’s Al-Nashama in another international friendly.

The Rangers stopper’s inclusion adds depth to Nigeria’s defensive options, and his commitment to the team has already impressed both coaches and teammates as he looks forward to cementing his place in the squad.
