Super Eagles projected to drop to 39th, retain fifth spot in Africa in July’s FIFA ranking
The Super Eagles of Nigeria have been projected to drop from 38th to 39th in the world but retain her fifth spot in Africa when FIFA officially releases the July rankings on Wednesday, SportsNow.com.ng can report.
Nigeria dropped eight places, from 30th to 38th in the world and from third to fifth in Africa in June when FIFA released the last rankings.
The Super Eagles had moved to 14 places up in February after coming second behind Cote d’Ivoire at the Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire, becoming the 28th best in the world to equal their best ranking since May 2013.
Super Eagles’ slide is due to their disappointing performances in the two FIFA World Cup qualifying games against South Africa who they forced to a 1-1 draw in Uyo and Republic of Benin who they lost 2-1 to in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire.
Meanwhile, Morocco are still the top ranked African nation despite the fact that the Atlas Lions have been projected to drop two places, from 12th to 14th best in the world.
Senegal will also drop from 18th to 19th but still Africa’s second best while Egypt unchanged as 36th best in the world and third in Africa with African champion, Cote d’Ivoire dropping from 37th to 38th but still ahead of Nigeria as Africa’s fourth best.
Freshly minted European champion, Spain are projected to move five places up to third in the world behind Copa America kings, Argentina with Brazil as the second best.
Serial losers, England are projected to move up a place to fourth in the July rankings.
