Super Falcons Pull Off Epic Comeback to Clinch 10th WAFCON Title

Nigeria’s Super Falcons delivered a breathtaking second-half comeback to defeat hosts Morocco 3–2 and claim their record-extending 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title in front of a stunned crowd at the Stade Olympique.

Trailing 2–0 at halftime, Nigeria looked rattled as Morocco surged ahead with goals from Ghizlane Chebbak and Sanaâ Mssoudy, igniting hopes of a historic first title for the Atlas Lionesses. But the Super Falcons, true to their legacy, roared back with a display of grit, precision, and championship pedigree.

Coach Justin Madugu’s halftime talk sparked a revival. In the 61st minute, a VAR-reviewed handball by Nouhaila Benzina handed Nigeria a lifeline. Esther Okoronkwo stepped up and converted the penalty to make it 2–1.

Momentum shifted. Ten minutes later, Okoronkwo turned provider, threading a pass to Folashade Ijamilusi, who buried a low strike to level the score.

With extra time looming, Nigeria struck again. In the 88th minute, Okoronkwo delivered a pinpoint assist from a set-piece, and Joe Echegini coolly slotted home the winner, completing one of the most dramatic turnarounds in WAFCON history.

Despite a late Moroccan surge, Nigeria held firm. The final whistle confirmed their 10th title in 13 editions, reaffirming their dominance in African women’s football.

Morocco, led by coach Jorge Vilda, had impressed throughout the tournament and were bidding to become only the third nation to win WAFCON. But the night belonged to Nigeria.
