Super Falcons seal Morocco 2026 spot after gritty draw against Bénin Republic
Nigeria’s Super Falcons have officially qualified for the 2026 Women Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco following a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Bénin Republic in the return leg of the final qualification round.
The result, played out at the MKO Abiola Sports Arena in Abeokuta, secured a 3-1 aggregate victory for the reigning African champions.
The match saw the Amazons of Bénin Republic put up a spirited fight, with Dossi Germaine Honfo and Yenido Romaine Gandonou leading a vibrant and determined attack. Despite their intensity, the Super Falcons remained composed and clinical.
In the 13th minute, defender Ashley Plumptre opened the scoring with a powerful header from an Esther Okoronkwo corner.
Nigeria continued to press, with Asisat Oshoala and Michelle Alozie coming close to extending the lead. However, the Amazons found their equalizer in the 60th minute through Yasminath Djibril, whose free-kick soared past goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie.
Despite late chances from Folashade Ijamilusi and Joy Omewa, the Falcons were unable to reclaim the lead.
Nonetheless, the draw was enough to book their ticket to Morocco, where they will aim to defend their title and pursue an 11th continental crown.
Qualification also keeps Nigeria in contention for a spot at the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
