Super Falcons shine bright in gritty draw against Portugal
Nigeria’s Super Falcons showcased resilience, flair, and sheer class in a spirited 0-0 stalemate with Portugal in Lisbon, signaling their readiness for the upcoming Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
Despite arriving in Portugal less than 24 hours before kick-off, the nine-time African champions appeared undaunted, going toe-to-toe with the hosts in a thrilling pre-WAFCON friendly.
The standout star of the night was reigning African Goalkeeper of the Year, Chiamaka Nnadozie, who pulled off a string of world-class saves to keep the Portuguese at bay. From the sixth minute, when Diana Silva threatened after a defensive lapse, to a barrage of attacks in the second half, Nnadozie stood tall—denying efforts from Jessica Silva, Fatima Pinto, and Andreia Norton in quick succession.
Francisca Ordega was a constant menace in attack, nearly unlocking the defense with her creativity and drive. Her link-up with captain Rasheedat Ajibade and later with Rinsola Babajide and Ifeoma Onumonu nearly bore fruit, with Ordega even rattling the crossbar in the closing stages.
Injecting fresh energy from the bench, including Ashleigh Plumptre and Halimatu Ayinde, the Super Falcons controlled large portions of the second half and left Estádio José Gomes having won admiration and respect.
Nigeria now turns its focus to Morocco, with another tune-up game against Ghana’s Black Queens scheduled for Sunday in Casablanca. They will begin their quest for a 10th African title on July 6 against Tunisia.
