Sweet revenge as Eagles score three goals in a match for the first time in almost two years
It was sweet revenge for the Super Eagles of Nigeria who trounced the Cheetahs, their Republic of Benin counterparts 3-0 Saturday at the Godswill Akpabio stadium in Uyo, Akwa Ibom state.
Two goals from 2024 Ballon D’or nominee and UEFA Europa League champion, Ademola Lookman and one from man of the moment, Victor Osimhen sealed the win for the Nigerians who seem to have avenged their scandalous 2-1 defeat to the same Cheetahs in a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire in June.
The last time the Super Eagles scored three times in a game was in their 3-2 defeat of Mozambique in Algarve, Portugal in October 2023.
And the last time they scored at least three goals without conceding a goal was in Uyo where they bashed Sao Tome and Principe in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.
Interestingly, Lookman scored once and Osimhen scored thrice in that game.
The Super Eagles have now moved top of their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying group with three points and three games while Rwanda, who they play next on Tuesday in Kigali and Libya are joint second with one point each after their 1-1 draw in Libya on Wednesday.
