Team Edo Poised for Victory as 2nd Niger Delta Games Near Conclusion

Team Edo has tightened its grip on the medal table at the 2nd Niger Delta Sports Festival, tagged Edo 2026, and now leads both in gold and overall medal counts with just two days left before the curtain falls on the competition.

Under the leadership of Hon. Amadin Desmond Enabulele, Executive Chairman of the Edo State Sports Commission, the host state looks set to clinch overall victory, while Delta appears on course to finish second for the second consecutive edition.

Edo has amassed 40 gold medals, 11 more than Delta’s 29 and Bayelsa’s 23. The state’s total medal haul stands at 84, edging past Delta’s 82 and leaving Bayelsa trailing with 57.

This commanding position reflects Edo’s dominance across multiple disciplines, from swimming and athletics to wrestling, weightlifting, boxing, and racquet sports.

The festival has seen Edo athletes break a 24-year drought in swimming, secure multiple golds in wrestling and weightlifting, and dominate in boxing and tennis. Their performances have electrified spectators and reinforced Edo’s reputation as a sporting powerhouse.

The current standings mark a reversal of fortunes compared to the inaugural edition in 2025, held in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

Then, Delta State won the highest number of medals overall but lost the gold medal race to Bayelsa by a single medal. This time, Edo looks ready to win on all fronts, combining the highest gold tally with the largest overall medal count.

With only a day of competition remaining, Edo’s athletes are on the brink of delivering a historic triumph for the host state.
