Tebogo and Kipyegon are Africa’s post-Diamond League top ranked man and woman
Sprinter Letsile Tebogo and middle-distance runner, Faith Kipyegon are the top ranked African man and woman following World Athletics’ post-Diamond League update on its world rankings.
Tebogo, who made history as the first African man to win the 200m at the Olympics garnered 1519 ranking score to top the list ahead of Kenyan duo of Marathoner, Kelvin Kiptum (1504 ranking score) and Emmanuel Wanyonyi (1499) while Algeria’s Djamel Sedjati (1485) and Berihu Aregawi (1458) complete the top five in Africa.
While Tebogo tops the list for men in Africa, the Botswanan who failed to add the Diamond League trophy to his Olympic gold is however ranked fourth in the world behind Armand Duplantis (1625), Jakob Ingebrigsten (1523), and Ryan Crouser (1520).
The African 200m record holder however tops the world and African ranking in the 200m and second in Africa in the 100m behind South Africa’s Akani Simbine and sixth in the world.
For the women, Kenya has six names in the top 10 ranking with Kipyegon and Beatrice Chebet in the top two.
Kipyegon, with a 1550 ranking score tops both the women’s overall ranking in Africa and the world after making history as the first woman to win the Olympics 1500m three times in a row and the Diamond League title five times.
Chebet is second, also both in the world and Africa with her 1545 ranking score, after she also made history as the first woman to win the 5000m and 10,000m at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
Ethiopia’s Tigst Assefa is third in the African ranking with a 1480 ranking score and 11th in the world.
