Tebogo moves top of world 200m ranking; Adeleke, Amusan drop
Olympic 200m champion, Letsile Tebogo has moved to the top of the event’s world ranking for the first time in his career following the update by World Athletics this week.
The Botswana star was ranked fourth with a ranking score of 1405 before the Olympics with Noah Lyles top with a ranking score of 1465.
The 21-year-old moved a step up to third after his Paris 2024 Olympics conquest with an increased ranking score of 1432 but with impressive wins at the Lausanne, Switzerland and Silesia, Poland Diamond League meetings, the two-time World U20 100m champion moved top with a ranking score of 1488.
Tebogo is projected to end the year as world number one if he wins the 200m at the Diamond League final in Brussels, Belgium next month.
The story is however different for Rhasidat Adeleke and Tobi Amusan.
Adeleke, the Irish star dropped from third to fourth in the latest ranking with a 1405 ranking score and has been supplanted by Salwa Eid Nasser, the Bahrain woman she has lost to three times now in August.
Prior to the Olympics, Adeleke, 21, was ranked third behind Marileidy Paulino and Natalia Kaczmarek, the Polish woman who denied her the European 400m title and bronze at the Olympics with Eid Nasser down in 13th.
The Irish athlete’s position did not change after the Olympics, but Eid Nasser had a geometrical leap, moving from 13th to fourth just after the Olympics and now third after defeating Adeleke for the third time at the Silesia Diamond League meeting.
Nigeria’s Tobi Amusan has been inactive in the circuit since she failed to make it to the final of the 100m hurdles at the Olympics and she has expextedly been dropping with every weekly update by World Athletics.
Fifth before the Olympics, she dropped two places to seventh after the update immediately after the Olympics, allowing Paris Olympics finalists and medalists, Cyréna Samba-Mayela, Masai Russell and Nadine Visser to move above her.
With two 100m hurdles concluded in Lausanne and Silesia without the Nigerian, she was expected to drop and this she did following the update this week, dropping three places to 10th in the high hurdles.
