Tinubu Delivers on Promises as D’Tigress Receive Houses, Cash and National Honours
The Federal Government has fulfilled its pledge to Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, as the players and coaching crew officially received documents for their houses and national honours in Lyon, France.
The presentation was carried out by the Chairman of the Nigeria Sports Commission (NSC), Mallam Shehu Dikko, marking a significant moment in the recognition of the team’s achievements.
The promises were first made during a reception with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the State House, following D’Tigress’ historic victory at the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket Championship in Ivory Coast.
At that event, the President announced a comprehensive package of rewards: each player was to receive $100,000, a three-bedroom flat at the Renewed Hope Estate in Abuja, and the national honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON).
Members of the coaching and technical crew were promised $50,000 each, alongside housing and the same national honour.
With the presentation in Lyon, the government has now delivered on these commitments, ensuring that the athletes’ sacrifices and triumphs are tangibly rewarded.
D’Tigress, who defeated Mali 78–64 to clinch their fifth consecutive AfroBasket title and seventh overall, have cemented their place as Africa’s basketball powerhouse.
