Track and Field News Tips Ajayi, Okon, Ogazi, Godfred Among NCAA Outdoor Title Contenders for 2026

Kanyinsola Ajayi and Israel Okon Sunday have been tipped among the top contenders for the 2026 NCAA men’s outdoor 100m title by Track and Field News, the sport’s leading magazine.

The Nigerian duo, who are still competing in the indoor season, are expected to carry their form into the outdoor campaign in June.

Last year, Ajayi finished second and Okon third indoors, before placing fourth and seventh respectively in the outdoor 100m.

Their consistency has convinced Track and Field News analysts that both athletes are strong candidates to reach the final again and possibly secure podium finishes.

The magazine also highlighted Samuel Ogazi, the reigning NCAA 400m champion, as a favourite to defend his crown.

Ogazi’s triumph last year marked the first time a Nigerian athlete had won the outdoor 400m since Clement Chukwu in 1999.

Having started the outdoor season strongly, he is seen as a reliable bet to repeat the feat, which would be a historic achievement for Nigerian athletics.

Meanwhile, Charles Godfred has been tipped to return to the NCAA long jump final after finishing fourth last year.

With his growing experience, he is expected to challenge for a medal this time around.

Together, Ajayi, Okon, Ogazi, and Godfred represent a new generation of Nigerian athletes making waves in the American collegiate system, with hopes high for another breakthrough season in 2026.
