Troost-Ekong: Osimhen Is the World’s Best Striker

Nigeria captain William Troost-Ekong has offered glowing praise for Victor Osimhen, hailing his teammate as the best striker in the world and the driving force behind the Super Eagles’ push for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Osimhen, who first announced himself on the global stage at the 2015 U17 World Cup by winning the Golden Boot and Silver Ball, has since become Nigeria’s talisman.

Now just six goals shy of Rasheed Yekini’s all-time scoring record, the former Napoli forward has been instrumental in recent qualifiers, netting five times in the last two matches.
Speaking ahead of Nigeria’s crucial clash with DR Congo, Troost-Ekong explained that Osimhen’s impact goes far beyond his goals.

‘Victor is a very special player for me. He’s the best forward in the world right now and that’s not just about the last two games.

For two or three years he’s been the main forward for Nigeria, consistently delivering,’ he said. The captain highlighted Osimhen’s hunger and determination as the qualities that set him apart, noting that his confidence and skill have grown since his first senior camp in 2019.

Troost-Ekong also pointed out that Osimhen is evolving into a leader within the squad, building a legacy that will be remembered in Nigerian football.

While praising Osimhen, Troost-Ekong stressed the importance of the collective effort, reminding fans that the striker’s brilliance is supported by the team around him.

Reflecting on his own role as captain, he dismissed the idea of added pressure, describing every game as an honour and emphasizing the shared responsibility among Nigeria’s leaders.

He singled out Wilfred Ndidi for his captaincy in the recent victory over Gabon, expressing delight that the midfielder will be available for the upcoming match.

Nigeria, having overcome Gabon, must now defeat DR Congo to secure a place in next year’s inter-confederation play-offs in Mexico, where two additional teams will qualify for the World Cup.

Troost-Ekong’s confidence in his squad, coupled with Osimhen’s unstoppable form, has given the Super Eagles belief that they can reach the global stage once again.
