Udeze Explains Finidi’s Survival at Rivers United Amid Poor Continental Form
Former Nigeria international Ifeanyi Udeze has explained why Rivers United have retained Finidi George as head coach despite their poor showing in the CAF Champions League.
Rivers United endured a dismal campaign in the group stage, losing five matches and drawing one. They finished bottom of their group with just a single point, the lowest tally among all participating teams.
Only JS Kabylie also failed to win a game, but the Algerian side managed three draws to finish with three points.
Speaking on Brila FM, Udeze said Finidi’s position remains secure largely because of his roots in Rivers State, and because the club is still in contention for the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) title.
‘The reason Finidi is still keeping his job as it stands now is because he is a home boy, from Rivers State. There are chances that Rivers United can win the league. They are third and have five outstanding matches,’ Udeze explained.
Rivers United currently sit third in the NPFL standings, three points behind leaders Ikorodu City. They still have five games in hand—away fixtures against Kwara United, Shooting Stars, and Niger Tornadoes, plus home ties against Barau FC and El-Kanemi Warriors.
