Uganda’s Orogot supplants Onwuzurike as third fastest 200m runner in collegiate history, named National Athlete of the Week
University Alabama track and field’s Tarsis Orogot has supplanted Nigeria’s Udodi Onwuzurike as the third fastest 200m runner in American collegiate history.
The Ugandan ran 19.75 to win the half lap event at the 2024 SEC Outdoor Championships in Gainesville, Florida at the weekend to push Onwuzurike who ran 19.76 last June at the NCAA Division 1 final in Austin, Texas to fourth.
Orogot is however behind another Nigerian, Divine Oduduru whose 19.73 run also in Austin, Texas in June 2019 is bettered only by the 19.69 Walter Dix ran in May 2007 in Gainesville, Florida.
Meanwhile, Orogot has been named Men’s National Athlete of the Week by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association following his electrifying 200-meter performance.
His performance not only marked the third-fastest time in collegiate history but also established new records, including the Ugandan national record, East African record, school record, and meet record.
This is the second consecutive year that Orogot has been named M-F Athletic National Athlete of the Week during the outdoor season.
