Umukoro, Egwero join Ofili, Chukwuma for high-stakes showdown at ATX Sprint Classic
Nigerian sprinters Success Umukoro and seasoned speedster Ogho-Oghene Egwero are set to line up alongside Favour Ofili and Rosemary Chukwuma at the ATX Sprint Classic 2025 this Saturday. The event, a World Athletics-certified meet, will take place at Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas.
Umukoro, 24, is returning to the track after a six-week break and will compete in the third of four opening round heats in the women’s 100m, running from lane three. She clocked a lifetime best of 11.25 seconds earlier this April and will be eyeing a solid comeback.
Ofili, who is in the process of switching nationality from Nigeria to Turkey following administrative hiccups by Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) officials—errors that denied her Olympic appearances in both Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024—has been drawn in lane four of a stacked first heat.
Her rivals include training partner Candace Hill, Aleia Hobbs, Kayla White, Tamara Clark, and Mikiah Brisco.
Chukwuma, meanwhile, will contest the second heat from lane three, going head-to-head with reigning Olympic 200m champion Gabby Thomas in what promises to be a thrilling matchup.
In the men’s 100m, 36-year-old Egwero, known for his consistency and longevity, will run in lane seven of the third of six heats.
With a personal best of 10.06 seconds set back in 2011, Egwero remains a competitive force, recently clocking 10.32 seconds at the Major Impact Invitational in Dallas this May.
Both Umukoro and Egwero are also slated to compete in the 200m, rounding out a busy and potentially rewarding day for the Nigerian athletes in Texas.
