Victor Boniface: ‘As a striker, I want to create chances and not just finish them’

Bayer Leverkussen striker, Victor Boniface says he does not want to be the ‘classic strikers who wait for their moment in the penalty area but then it can
happen that they don’t touch the ball for ten minutes.’

The Nigerian has taken the German Bundesliga by storm after his summer move from Belgium. He has scored six goals, which puts him in the fourth position on
the league’s scorer list. With two assists, he presently has the second-most in his team

In total, the 22-year-old has taken 39 shots at goal and is now the best player in this category in the league statistics.
Asked how he wishes to play as a striker, Boniface told his club’s official website he is not like the traditional striker who waits for supplies from the midfielders.

‘I don’t like that. I want to play differently, create chances and not just finish them. I like dropping back to take part in the build-up
and I like pulling opposition defenders towards me and thereby creating space for my teammates.

‘A bit of this style is in my nature. I used to play in midfield and increasingly took part in build-up play. I often watch videos of tricky and intelligent players to develop my game in that way to be able to the help the team even more,’ said the 22 year old.

With one of his goals in September currently nominated for the Bundesliga goal of the month award, Boniface is thrilled with the two awards he won in August.

He was named the rookie and player of the month.

‘The two awards are a special honour that make me proud. I really feel at home in Leverkusen and in this team. I had contact with a couple of players, for example Jerry (Jeremie Frimpong, ed.) before I arrived. I knew how good this team is, how good they can be and how brilliantly I can fit in with them.’
