‘We Didn’t Have Equipment’: Oliseh Reveals Shocking Challenges as Super Eagles Coach

Former Super Eagles head coach Sunday Oliseh has opened up on the difficulties he encountered during his time in charge of the national team.

Appointed in 2015 after Nigeria failed to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations to defend their title, Oliseh’s tenure lasted less than a year before he resigned, citing shortcomings within the Nigeria Football Federation.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, the 1994 AFCON winner recounted the harsh realities of working under challenging conditions, particularly the lack of basic training equipment.

‘When I was coaching the Super Eagles we did not have the equipment,’ Oliseh said on the Sunday Oliseh’s Global Football Insights Podcast.

He recalled a striking incident where training had to be delayed because the team did not have spare jerseys.

‘There were sometimes I had to take the boys out to training but we couldn’t go on the said time because we had to wait for the clothes they use in the morning to dry up because they washed them,’ he explained.

Oliseh admitted he was shocked by the situation, given Nigeria’s stature in African football.

‘Those were the things I was facing. It was shocking to me because I knew that a top nation like ours, getting sponsors wasn’t a difficult thing,’ he added.

Despite the challenges, Oliseh managed to achieve some success, guiding the home-based Eagles to qualification for the African Nations Championship (CHAN) in Rwanda.
