‘We have a massive player in Dowman’: Arteta praises record-breaking teen after Arsenal’s historic win

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has hailed 15-year-old Max Dowman as a ‘massive player’ following the teenager’s record-breaking debut in the Champions League during Arsenal’s 3-0 victory over Slavia Prague.

Dowman, who came on as a late substitute for Leandro Trossard, became the youngest player ever to feature in the competition at just 15 years and 308 days, surpassing the previous record held by Borussia Dortmund’s Youssoufa Moukoko.

Speaking to UEFA after the match, Arteta was full of admiration for Dowman’s fearless approach on such a grand stage.

‘It doesn’t get any harder than this competition and Max at 15 straight away looked to take people on and win free-kicks,’ he said. ‘That shows the personality these kids have. The way he plays, he attracts a lot of contact. We have a massive player there.’

Arteta also emphasized the significance of Dowman’s inclusion, noting that his form and potential made the decision an easy one.

‘Max is the youngest ever to feature in a Champions League match and it tells you what incredible form he is in and the potential he has,’ he added.

Dowman’s debut came on a night of milestones for Arsenal, who matched a 122-year-old club record with their eighth consecutive clean sheet and extended their winning run to eight matches in all competitions.

The Gunners remain unbeaten in 13 games this season and have won all four of their Champions League group stage fixtures.
