Who can catch Mbappé in the Champions League Golden Boot race?

As the Champions League phase reaches its climax this week, all eyes are on the Golden Boot race, and whether anyone can catch Kylian Mbappé.

The Real Madrid forward has been in devastating form, scoring 11 goals in just six appearances, including two hat-tricks, to establish a commanding lead. His latest brace in the 6-1 demolition of Monaco on Matchday 7 further strengthened his position, leaving Bayern Munich’s Harry Kane four goals adrift.

Kane remains the closest challenger after rediscovering his scoring touch with a double against Union Saint-Gilloise. The England captain had endured a three-game drought but now sits on seven goals.

To overtake Mbappé, however, he would need a remarkable haul against PSV Eindhoven, particularly if the Frenchman adds to his tally in Madrid’s trip to Benfica.

Behind Kane, Victor Osimhen, Erling Haaland and Anthony Gordon are locked on six goals apiece.

Osimhen’s hat-trick against Ajax showcased his potency, but the Galatasaray striker has failed to score in his last two outings.

Haaland had been scoring consistently until Matchday 5, and although he converted a penalty in City’s comeback against Madrid, he drew a blank in his return to Norway against Bodø/Glimt.

Gordon, meanwhile, began the campaign with goals in each of Newcastle’s first three fixtures and has returned to form with strikes on Matchdays 6 and 7.

The mathematics, though, are daunting. Kane would need at least five goals to surpass Mbappé if the Madrid star fails to score again, while Osimhen, Haaland and Gordon would require double hat-tricks to leapfrog him.

Mbappé, by contrast, could put the race beyond doubt with even a single strike in Lisbon.

The Frenchman is chasing his first Champions League top scorer crown, a title previously dominated by Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and more recently Erling Haaland.
