World Athletics Ratifies Amusan’s 12.12 seconds World 100m hurdles Record
World Athletics has ratified the world record set by Tobi Amusan at the World Athletics Championships Oregon22 has been ratified.
Amusan’s 12.12 seconds in the women’s 100m hurdles semifinals is now officially in the record books.
After clocking an African record of 12.40 seconds in the 100m hurdles heats, the world was put on notice that 25-year-old Amusan was capable of something special.
The next day, she ran 12.12 (0.9m/s) in the semifinals to improve the world record of 12.20 seconds that had been set by USA’s Kendra Harrison in London in 2016.
The Nigerian wasn’t done there, though, and she followed that remarkable performance with a wind-assisted 12.06 seconds (2.5m/s) to win the final.
“The goal was to come out and to win this gold,” she said. “Honestly, I believe in my abilities, but I was not expecting a world record at these championships,’ Amusan said after making history as the first Nigerian to be crowned a world champion in the history of the championships.
Amusan also added the Nigerian Championships record (12.54 seconds) and Commonwealth Games record (12.30 seconds) to her records-laden year in which she was also crowned African, Commonwealth, Diamond League and World champion.
Other athletes whose records ahve also been ratified are Sydney McLaughlin (50.68 seconds) of the USA in the women’s 400m hurdles, Sweden’s Mondo Duplantis (6.21m) in the men’s Pole Vault and Botswana’s leslie Tebogo who set a new World U20 World record at the World U20 championships in Cali, Colombia in August.
