World Athletics set to review AFN 2025 Elections amid allegations of constitutional breaches and electoral irregularities
World Athletics has confirmed it may review the 2025 elections of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) following multiple reports of constitutional violations, procedural irregularities, and potential electoral fraud.
The elections, held on June 12—Nigeria’s Democracy Day—have drawn widespread criticism from stakeholders and observers, with allegations that the process violated both the 2017 and 2023 AFN Constitutions.
Key concerns under review include:
Insufficient Notice for Constitutional Amendment: The May 25, 2023 extraordinary congress was convened with only 7 working days’ notice, falling short of the 15 working days required by Article 10.1.7 of the 2023 Constitution.
Improper Electoral Committee Formation: The AFN board did not meet to propose the composition of the electoral committee, as mandated. The congress that named the committee was itself convened in breach of constitutional provisions.
Overvoting Allegations: The AFN Constitution permits only 37 votes (36 states + FCT), yet 42 votes were recorded—raising serious concerns about ballot integrity.
Deviation from Recognized Governance Standards: The 2017 Constitution, recognized by World Athletics and used in the 2021 elections, requires a 60-day notice for constitutional amendments—another benchmark that was not met.
World Athletics Communications Manager, Maphuti Hlako, stated:
‘We are aware of the elections and are awaiting official confirmation of the results and minutes of the meeting. Upon receipt, all documentation will be reviewed, and if needed, appropriate follow-up will be conducted to ensure the integrity of the process.’
World Athletics reiterates its commitment to upholding democratic principles, transparency, and constitutional compliance in all member federations. Any deviation from these standards may result in sanctions, including suspension from international competitions.
