World champion, Danielle Williams ‘dethrones’ Amusan again, wins in Zurich

Jamaica’s Danielle Williams has ‘dethroned’ Tobi Amusan as champion of the Diamond League meeting in Zurich on Thursday, barely a week after supplanting the
Nigerian as world 100m hurdles champion in Budapest, Hungary.

Williams, Amusan’s bossom friend, ran 12.54 to win at the Weltklasse in Zurich ahead of the USA duo of Alaysha Johnson (12.58) and former world record
holder, Kendra Harrison (12.59).

The Jamaican had stunned the world in Budapest when she came from ‘almost nowhere’ to storm home first in the high hurdles final ahead of Olympic champion,
Jasmine Camacho-Quinn and Harrison as well as defending champion, Amusan who finbished in sixth (12.62).

On both ocassions however, Williams could not race past Amusan’s 12.12 world record in Budapest and the 12.29 meeting record in Zurich.

The Nigerian had won the last two 100m hurdles races in Zurich, running 12.42 in 2021 to break the African record and 12.29 in 2022 to set a new meeting
record.

Meanwhile, Williams says she was thrilled to come out onto the track at the Letzigrund Stadion as world champion.

‘It is a wonderful feeling coming out here as a World Champion. I mean, I have to give all the thanks for that.

‘The race was a bit slower than I expected, but you know, I came out injury free, and with a win, so I can’t complain. [About the disrupted start] I mean I
just keep repeating to myself what it is I need to do which is to focus on the gun.

‘I haven’t had much time to celebrate my big win in Budapest, it will probably the day after I finish my season. I am now onto my next meet, and I will try
to celebrate after Eugene,’ said the 30 year old post race.
