World Ranking Update: Only Five Nigerians ranked in Top 10 of their events, Three in Top 100
Only five Nigerian athletes, two men and three women are ranked in the top 10 of their respective events following the latest update on World Rankings released by World Athletics this week.
For the men, Olympic Shot Put finalist and Diamond League campaigner, Chukwuebuka Cornnell Enekwechi is ranked the seventh best in his event after garnering 1,374 ranking score.
The 32 year old performance in the Diamond League has boosted his total score as the World Athleics’ elite one day meeting series is considered third best in terms of ranking athletes after the Olympics and the World Championships.
Also in the top 10 of his event is Ezekiel Nathaniel who has had a breakout season and will be competing in the Diamond League final on Thursday.
Ezekiel is ranked 10th in the 400m hurdles with his 1,348 ranking score.
His entry into the Diamond League boosted his total ranking score as he was ranked 21st best in June, after his incredible Collegiate season in the USA.
Interestingly, only Ezekiel has made it to the top 100 (91st) in the overall men’s ranking while Enekwechi, who has been in and out is currently out (108).
For the women, Favour Ofili is the highest ranked Nigerian woman in any athletics discipline. The 22 year old Paris 2024 Olympic finalist is ranked sixth in the 200m (1376 points).
Global medalists, Tobi Amusan (1382) and Ese Brume (1278) are ranked ninth in the 100m hurdles and long jump respectively.
Only the duo of Amusan (74th) and Ofili (83rd) made it to the top 100 overall women’s ranking.
