Year 2022 In Review: Nigerian Women Ranked 7th Best On The Track At Oregon World Athletics Championships

Tobi Amusan’s incredible and unprecedented gold medal winning feat and the National Record setting performance of the women’s 4x100m relay team ensured Nigerian women ranked among the top 10 best performers on the track at the World Athletics Championships in Oregon, USA last July.

Although Nigeria placed 20th on the overall (all disciplines in both men and women events) placing table at the end of the championships largely due to the performances of their female athletes, when set against the performances of other female athletes on the track from all the nations that participated in the championships, the Nigerian track women ranked in the top 10 in the placing table.

Points were awarded for first to eighth positions in a descending order with each gold medal position attracting eight points.

Nigeria track female athletes garnered 13 points to place seventh behind Jamaica (75 points), USA (74), Ethiopia (60), Great Britain (39), Kenya (39) and Netherlands (20).

In the overall placing table, Nigeria placed 20 with 23 points.

Amusan got eight points for coming first in the 100m hurdles, Ese Brume got seven points for finishing second in the Long Jump event, the women’s 4x100m relay team of Rosemary Chukwuma, Joy Udo-Gabriel, Favour Ofili and Grace Nwokocha garnered five points for placing fourth while the mixed relay team got three points for finishing sixth.

Nigeria however finished 13th on the medal table courtesy the gold and silver medals won by Amusan and Brume respectively.
