Zenith Bank Rewards D’Tigress with ₦200m for Historic AfroBasket Victory

Zenith Bank PLC has announced a ₦200 million donation to the victorious D’Tigress team in recognition of their extraordinary achievement at the recently concluded 2023 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket tournament in Kigali, Rwanda.
This reward comes on the heels of widespread commendations and earlier gestures of appreciation from the Federal Government and further underscores the importance of corporate support in sports development.
In an unprecedented gesture by the financial institution, ₦10 million will be credited to each of the players in individual Zenith Bank accounts set to be opened in their names. The balance of the donation will be allocated to the technical crew in appreciation of their tireless contributions to the team’s historic triumph.
This corporate intervention is a remarkable boost to the morale of the team, which recently captured its fifth consecutive AfroBasket title—a feat unmatched in African women’s basketball history.
With this win, D’Tigress have now recorded 29 straight victories in the tournament, affirming their dominance and cementing their legacy as a continental powerhouse.
Zenith Bank’s donation complements earlier rewards given by the Federal Government, which included cash gifts, national honours, and residential accommodation. Together, these gestures reflect the growing recognition of the team’s excellence and dedication.
Speaking on the team’s accomplishments, President of the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF), Engr. Musa Kida, applauded the players for their commitment, resilience, and sportsmanship.
Under Kida’s leadership, D’Tigress have clinched four out of their five AfroBasket titles, while breaking new grounds in global competitions including appearances at the Olympic Games and World Cup qualifiers.
Engr. Kida also commended Zenith Bank’s longstanding support for basketball in Nigeria, noting that such partnerships are critical to sustaining the growth and visibility of the sport. He dedicated the team’s latest win to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his administration’s growing commitment to sports excellence.
The continued success of D’Tigress, both on and off the court, signals a new era of opportunity, representation, and investment in women’s sports across Nigeria. The players have not only lifted trophies but inspired a generation.
