Troost-Ekong, Aina and Lookman named in AFCON 2023 Best X1

The Super Eagles trio of assistant captain, William Troost-Ekong, right wing back, Ola Aina and forward Ademola Lookman have been included in the Confederation of African Football, CAF’s team of the 34th edition of the Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON 2023.
Troost-Ekong, named player of the tournament despite the fact that Nigeria finished second behind host, Cote d’Ivoire made history as the first defender/full back to score three goals in the same AFCON edition since Opta collects this data (2010).
The Nigerian and Sébastien Haller of Côte d’Ivoire are the first players to score in both CAF semi-final and final in a same AFCON since Gedo with Egypt in 2010.
Meanwhile, Cote d’Ivoire, the new African champions, have three names in the Best Xl: Ghislan Konan, Jean Michael Seri and Franck Kessie. Kessie’s goal in the final helped the home side to secure the title.
South Africa, who entered the competition as underdogs but marched gallantly to a third-place finish have keeper, Ronwen Williams and Teboho Mokoena. Williams made history when he saved four penalties in one match during the competition.
DR Congo, fourth-place, also had two names: Yoane Wissa and Chancel Mbemba.
