199th Manchester Derby: Man City Chase Historic Old Trafford Record as Haaland Eyes History
Manchester City will be chasing Premier League history when they travel to Old Trafford to face Manchester United in Sunday’s Manchester derby.
City have won nine Premier League away games at Old Trafford and could become the first visiting team to record 10 victories at the famous stadium.
The Citizens also have another piece of history within reach. Having won their opening three league matches of the season, victory over United would make City the first team in Premier League history to win their first four games of a campaign on seven occasions.
City and Chelsea have both achieved the feat six times, but a derby victory would give the reigning champions the outright record.
Enzo Maresca’s side arrive in strong form, having won their last four matches in all competitions. Their latest success came in the Champions League, where Erling Haaland scored twice in a 2-0 victory away to Porto.
Haaland was also the match-winner in City’s 1-0 Premier League victory over Coventry City last weekend and will again be one of the main threats to United.
The Norwegian is also chasing personal history in the derby.
Haaland has scored eight Premier League goals against Manchester United, matching Sergio Aguero and Wayne Rooney for the most goals in Premier League Manchester derby history.
The remarkable part is that Haaland has needed only seven derby appearances to reach eight goals, compared with Aguero’s 13 games and Rooney’s 21.
A goal on Sunday would therefore give Haaland the outright record for the most Premier League Manchester derby goals.
United, meanwhile, will be seeking back-to-back home league derby victories for the first time since the 2009/10 and 2010/11 seasons.
Michael Carrick enjoyed a perfect start to his second stint in charge of United when he masterminded a 2-0 home victory over City in January.
But City have responded strongly since that defeat and are now unbeaten in their last nine Premier League away matches.
