2022/23 EPL Season: Awoniyi overtakes Iheanacho as Nigeria’s top scorer

Taiwo Awoniyi struck twice for Nothingham Forest in their 4-2 defeat of Southampton at the City ground Monday night to supplant the injured Kelechi Iheanacho
as Nigeria’s top scorer in the Premier League so far this term.

The 25 year old’s first brace in his debut season in the competition increased his total goal haul to six from 24 games, one more than Leicester City’s
Iheanacho who has been scheduled to return for the Foxes’ final two games of the season.

If he ends up as Nigeria’s top scorer in the competition, he will be repeating his compatriot at City Ground, Emmanuel Dennis’ feat last season who emerged
the top scoring Nigerian with 10 goals in 33 games in his debut season.

Iheanacho has been Nigeria’s top scorer in the competition in four of the eight seasons he has spent in the Premier League.

Meanwhile, Awoniyi has moved above Celestine Babayaro (five goals) to become joint 20th Nigerian top scorer in the history of the competition with former
Ipswich Town winger, Finidi George who netted his six goals in 25 appearances in the 2001/2002 season. .
