2023 AFCON: Guinea Bissau Move Above Eagles In Group A

Djurtus Close in on qualification after win over Sao Tome

Guinea Bissau edged out Sao Tome and Principe 1-0 on Wednesday to move top of Group A with 10 points, one above Nigeria who play Sierra Leone on Sunday in
Monrovia.

The Djurtus are a just a step away from sealing their qualification to next year’s Africa Cup of Nations in Cote D’Ivoire.

In fact, a draw on Sunday between the Leone Stars and the Super Eagles will secure Guinea Bissau’s place at the tournament.

Substitute Zinho Gano scored the solitary goal for Guinea Bissau in a cagy match, but it was not mathematically enough to hand them a ticket to next year’s
extravaganza in Cote d’Ivoire.

The first half didn’t have many clear cut chances, with Mama Balde having several opportunities, but he could’t find a shot on target.

If Nigeria lose on Sunday, Guinea Bissau will need a point when they host Sierra Leone in September to book their place.

Nigeria and Guinea Bissau will both qualify with a game to spare each if Nigeria avoids defeat in Monrovia on Sunday.
