2026 Commonwealth Games: Team Nigeria Eyes More Gold as Four Weightlifters Take Centre Stage

Team Nigeria will look to four weightlifters to deliver more medals at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games on Monday as the competition continues at the SEC Armadillo.

Edidiong Joseph Umoafia will open Nigeria’s weightlifting campaign in the men’s 71kg event at 09:00.

Umoafia won a bronze medal in the men’s 67kg category at the 2022 Commonwealth Games and will be hoping to improve on that performance in Glasgow.

Omolola Onome Didih will compete in the women’s 53kg final at 13:00. She heads into the competition with strong credentials after winning gold at the 2025 Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships in Ahmedabad, India, with a combined lift of 197kg.

Rafiatu Folashade Lawal will then defend her Commonwealth title in the women’s 58kg event at 15:30. Lawal won gold in the women’s 59kg category at Birmingham 2022 and will be aiming to add another Commonwealth title to her impressive record.

Adedapo Adeleke Opadeji will complete Nigeria’s weightlifting programme when he competes in the men’s 79kg event at 20:00. Opadeji won three silver medals in the 79kg category at the 2026 African Senior Weightlifting Championships in Ismailia, Egypt.
