21st National Sports Festival: Delta state grabs first gold medal

Team Delta on Wednesday picked the first gold medal of the 21st National Sports Festival holding in Asaba.

The Team Delta cyclists beat three other states, Team Oyo, Team Plateau and Team Lagos to emerge winners in the 12km mixed relay decided on Ibusa road earlier.

While Team Delta won in 35 mins 41.84 secs, Team Oyo got silver in 37 minutes 29.84 secs and Team Plateau won the bronze medal in 39 minutes 38.61 secs.

Lagos finished fourth in 40 minutes and 02.04 secs.

Two other states, Team Edo and Team Rivers were disqualified for their inability to present the minimum three female cyclists required for the event.

The Technical Director, Cycling Federation of Nigeria, Bashir Mohammed disclosed to journalists on Wednesday in Asaba.

Cycling, the first event of the 21st National Sports Festival was held before the official opening ceremony held at the Stephen Keshi stadium Wednesday evening.

Delta state is the defending champion of the National Sports Festival, having finished top on the medals table at delayed 20th edition tagged Edo 2020 held in Benin City last year.

Delta State has won seven times in nine appearances.
