24th African Senior Athletics Championships: Ashe Disqualified in 100m Heat

Nigeria’s sprint hopeful, Favour Ashe, suffered a major setback on the opening day of the 24th African Senior Athletics Championships in Accra, Ghana, as he was disqualified for a false start in his 100m heat.
Ashe, who had been instrumental in helping Nigeria qualify for both the men’s 4x100m and the mixed 4x100m relay events at next year’s World Athletics Championships, was widely tipped to spearhead Nigeria’s redemption in the men’s 100m, a race the country has not won since Olusoji Fasuba’s triumph in 2008 in Addis Ababa.
With Ashe out, the burden now falls on Chidera Ezeakor, who carries the unenviable task of attempting to rewrite Nigeria’s unwanted record in the blue-riband event.
Would you like me to expand on Nigeria’s sprint history, the African Senior Athletics Championships, or the career of Olusoji Fasuba?
