Chukwuebuka Enekwechi and Amaechi Obiageri headline Nigeria’s charge on Day One of the 24th African Senior Athletics Championships in Accra. Both athletes arrive as continental leaders in their events and clear favorites to deliver gold.

Enekwechi, the reigning Shot Put champion, is chasing history. Victory in Accra would make him the first man to win four consecutive African Championships titles in the event, following his triumphs in 2018, 2022, and 2024.

His pursuit surpasses the record of Egypt’s Ahmed Mohamed Ashoush, who managed three straight wins before Enekwechi’s era of dominance began.

For Obiageri, the women’s discus throw final represents a personal and national milestone. After securing bronze in 2022 and silver in 2024, she now aims to complete the medal set with gold in 2026.

A win would extend Nigeria’s tradition of excellence in the event, a legacy dating back to Chinwe Okoro’s victory in 2012 that ended South Africa’s Elizna Naude’s streak of four consecutive titles.
