Amusan battles Camacho-Quinn, Ali and Harisson in Los Angeles May 26
Nigerian battles reigning Olympic champion, former World Champion and former World record holder; Onyekwere, Enekwechi will also be in action
Nigeria’s reigning World 100m hurdles champion and record holder, Tobi Amusan will be up against a stacked field of high hurdlers when she competes later this month at the 2023 USATF Los Angeles Grand Prix in Los Angeles, California.
The 26 year old will be up against reigning Olympic champion, Jasmine Camacho-Quinn and former world record holder, Kendra Harisson.
Also in the stacked field are 2019 World champion, Nia Ali and 2023 USA Indoor Championships champion in the 60m hurdles, Alaysha Johnson.
Amusan will be resuming her rivalry with Camacho-Quinn after edging the Puerto Rican to two major titles last year viz the World Athletics championships gold and the Diamond League title.
Camacho-Quinn holds an 8-6 head to head lead over the Nigerian and ran 12.48 to win at the Doha Diamond League meeting last week.
Amusan is tied 7-7 in head to head count while Harisson whose 12.20 record the Nigerian broke with an incredible 12.12 run has beaten the Nigerian 15 times out of the 20 they have met.
All eyes will certainly be on the Nigerian to make an explosive restart to her season after running 12.59 personal season’s best at the Tom Jones Memmorial in Florida last month.
Meanwhile, the stage will not be for Amusan alone as two other Nigerian athletes have been confirmed for the USTAF event holding at the Drake Stadium in Los Angeles, California.
Reigning Commonwealth Games Discus Throw champion and African record holder, Chioma Onyekwere is set to compete in the event where she threw 64.96m last month to set a new African record.
Onyekwere, 28, is in the top five of top performers in her event so far this season and the Nigerian will be under pressure to deliver another huge throw as she prepares to become the first Nigerian, man or woman to win a medal in the event at the world stage after her historic feat at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.
Also billed to compete is Nigeria’s Shot Put champion and record holder, Chukwuebuka Enekwechi who is chasing the 2023 World Athletics Championships entry standard.
The 30 year old holds a personal season’s best of 21.28m which he achieved may 10 in Brazil but knows he needs to hit the 21.40m entry standard to book his ticket to Budapest.
