‘I Want to Become the Greatest Athlete Ever’: Ogazi Declares After Commonwealth Triumph

Nigeria’s Samuel Ogazi underlined his status as one of the brightest stars in world athletics after storming to his first senior international title with a commanding victory in the men’s 400m at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.

The 20-year-old, who arrived in Glasgow as the world No. 1 and already ranked as the fourth-fastest man in history over the distance, powered to gold in 44.25 seconds at Scotstoun Stadium.

Ogazi crossed the finish line 0.57 seconds ahead of defending champion Jereem Richards of Trinidad and Tobago, while South Africa’s Zakithi Nene claimed the bronze medal.

The victory marks another major milestone in the remarkable rise of the teenage Olympic finalist from Paris 2024, who finally secured the first senior international gold medal of his rapidly developing career after living up to his pre-race favourite tag.

Reflecting on his performance, Ogazi admitted he felt the weight of expectation but never allowed it to become a burden.

‘I wouldn’t say I had extra pressure on me,” Ogazi told the 2026 Commonwealth Games website. “It was just a bit of weight on my back to carry.

‘I didn’t want to come out here and disappoint. I just had to go out there and do my thing.

‘I was confident. I came here prepared. I’ve trained for this and for conditions like this.

‘The first 100 was a little bit sluggish, but I knew I had a lot inside me. I just stayed controlled, kept it easy and kept going.’

Despite already establishing himself among the world’s elite quarter-milers at just 20 years old, the Nigerian has even bigger ambitions for the future.

Speaking after his victory, Ogazi declared that his sights are firmly set on Olympic and World Championship success, with a long-term goal of becoming one of the greatest athletes the sport has ever seen.

‘Maybe an Olympic gold, a world championship gold, become the greatest athlete ever. That’s what I’m working towards.’
