World Athletics Championships, Budapest 2023: Ese Brume on track to make history, leaps into third straight final, Usoro out
Ese Brume is on track to become the first Nigerian to win three medals at the World Athletics Championships after the 27 year old flew to a distance of 6.72m to secure her spot in what will be her third straight final in the competition history.
She will also be hoping to extend her record as the only Nigerian to win two medals in the same event in the history of the championships.
The African long jump record holder proved she has the big ocassion temperament after she was written off by most athletics watchers following her indifferent outdoor campaign leading to the Worlds.
Brume didn’t make the final in her debut in 2017 but returned to become the second Nigerian after Blessing Okagbare to make the long jump podium in 2019.
The Nigerian improved from bronze to silver three years later in Oregon, USA and will be aiming to go a step higher in Budapest.
Meanwhile, Brume’s compatriot, Ruth Usoro will not be in the final as her 6.60m best was not good enough to secure her a place among the 12 athletes who made it to Sunday’s final.
The 25 year old missed making the final by just 1cm and ranked just a place (13th) outside the 12 qualifiers.
Usoro and Brume were in the finals of the World indoor and outdoor championships last year in Belgrade, Serbia and Oregon, USA respectively.
