World Athletics Championships, Budapest 2023: Gold and Silver For ‘Nigerians’ In 4x400m Mixed Relay!
Nigeria may not have been on the medal table yet but two Nigerians representing other countries have!
Nigerian-American, Rosey Effiong and British-Nigerian, Yemi Mary John won gold and silver in the final of the 4x400m mixed relay event to conclude the
opening day of the 19th World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary.
Effiong, daughter of a former Nigeria sprint star, Daniel Effiong who made history as the first Nigerian man to run in the final of the 100m event at the
World Championships (7th in 1993), ran the second leg for the United States team to win the gold medal in a 3:08.80 record time.
Yemi Mary John also helped Great Britain to win the silver medal in the event.
She, unlike Rosey, anchored the British to a new national record, with a 50.78 split.
Yemi Mary John, the reigning European U23 and World U20 400m champion has a Nigerian father, Christopher Olanrewaju John and an Italian mother, Gabriella
Faciotti.
It is hoped a bonafide Nigerian, Ese Brume will win Nigeria’s first medal of the Championships on Sunday night in the long jump event.
