Arsenal equal unwanted records in UEFA Champions League loss to Porto

Arsenal fell to a late 1-0 first leg defeat to Porto in their UEFA Champions League round of 16 tie to not only extend their winless run at the Estadio do
Dragao in Portugal but also match two unwanted records.

The Gunners failed to record a shot on target and it is just the second time on record (since 2003-04) that Arsenal have failed to record a shot on target in
a UEFA Champions League game, previously doing so away to Barcelona in the last 16 in March 2011.

In fact it is the first time in two years across all competitions that the Gunners have not had a shot on target and coach, Mikel Arteta gave Porto the credit for defending well when asked why his side has not had a shot on target for the first time in two years.

‘Credit to them, they defended well, but it’s true that when we got into certain situations, we didn’t finish the action or put the right final ball in the cross or from set-pieces as well. Every time we were touching somebody, it seemed to be a foul before we even kicked the ball. So, we will learn from that and be better,’ said Arteta.

Arsenal have also become the fifth side to lose five successive knockout stage games in the competition, after Roma in February 2018, Bayer Leverkusen in
March 2014, Celtic in March 2013 and Real Madrid in February 2010.

The north London side have also failed to score in a UEFA Champions League game for the first time since a 2-0 defeat to Barcelona in February 2016, ending a
run of 15 consecutive games with a goal (37 in total).
